About the Expedition

The OceanQuest and OceanX Around Africa Expedition is endorsed by the United Nations Ocean Decade for its contributions to capacity building and scientific understanding of the ocean.  The expedition will traverse destinations such as Moroni, Comoros; Walters Shoal, Madagascar; Agulhas Plateau and Cape Town, South Africa; Walvis Bay, Namibia; Mindelo, Cape Verde; Gran Canaria, Canary Islands to focus on Deep Sea Seamount and Ecosystems exploration and high resolution mapping.

A four-month expedition to explore the oceans surrounding Africa set sail this week. 

Semafor – Researchers will study deep-sea ecosystems in areas such as the Madagascar Ridge in the southwest Indian Ocean and Agulhas Plateau, about 300 miles south of South Africa. The mission also plans to generate new datasets on biodiversity patterns, bacterioplankton, and aerosols. The trip — a collaboration between the nonprofit groups OceanX and OceanQuest — launched from Comoros and will take in several stops across the continent, including the port city of Mindelo on the Cape Verde archipelago and Walvis Bay in Namibia.
